杜特蒂18日晚間抵達北京，展開對中國大陸的國是訪問。在此之前，中國中央電視台對杜特蒂進行專訪，並在18日深夜播出。
杜特蒂表示，他會以「決定性的時刻」形容這次訪問中國大陸。現在的中菲關係中，還有一些「黑暗的部分」，也可稱為「灰色區域」。「我希望完全消除他們，我想要打造更加緊密結合的關係，使中菲關係更加牢固」。
對於這次訪問，杜特蒂說，或許中菲雙方可在他訪問期間簽署條約，內容可關於合作及推動農業進步。在目前經濟不景氣下，菲律賓在經濟上唯一的希望，「實話實說那就是中國」。
杜特蒂還特地對著鏡頭說，「我會帶著友誼來談，伸出我的手，帶著溫暖的兄弟情利息保障倍數 英文 義；同時也會請求幫助，我要誠實地說，『我們需要你們的幫助』」。
至於菲律賓先前提出的南海仲裁案，杜特蒂表示，像是美國等很多國家支持執行仲裁的決定。但他認為，那就可能會引起第3次世界大戰。如果發生戰爭，堅持一片水域的所有權「還有什麼用呢」？這不能帶來繁榮，「而是愚蠢」。1051019
